The White Sand Beach of Santiago, Ilocos Sur

The Sabangan Cove, or more colloquially known as the Santiago Cove, is located in the small town of Santiago, Ilocos Sur. Because of its white sands, it is also known as the “Boracay of Ilocos Sur.” The coast, which is about a kilometer long, has white sands and calm waves, making it ideal for swimming. The white fine sands can be seen with the high sun.

Discover a quiet getaway in a remote sanctuary. A location where the sea and the mountains meet. A place devoid of rush and activity. Only amazing experiences survive in this place. Everything about you is important here. Enjoy!

The Municipality of Santiago Ilocos Sur, located after Candon City as you go north, is known as the “Boracay of Ilocos Sur.” Santiago Cove, known for its pristine white shoreline and quiet, shallow seas set against green mountains, is ideal for picnics and swimming. Cottages located nearby can be rented for a reasonable fee. There are also a few small restaurants nearby.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Take a bus to Vigan City, Ilocos Sur. Tell the conductor to drop you off at the Municipal Hall in Santiago, Ilocos Sur. Fare: 800 – 1000 pesos. ($18 – $20)
Renting a tricycle to Santiago Cove or Sabangan Cove costs 250 pesos ($5).
There are cottages for rent built by the local government, as well as hotels where you can stay.

The beach is open to the public, and those who are not staying at the hotel are welcome to visit.

Activities

Other amenities are available on the beachfront. They have a kayak, a jet ski, an island hopping boat, and a paddle boat. If you become weary of swimming and other beach activities, I discovered a view deck 20 feet away from Santiago Cove. The terrace provides a panoramic view of the cove as well as the Ilocos Mountains in the distance, which serve as the beach’s backdrop. A centuries-old Spanish watchtower can be found along its coast. Unfortunately, it is not permitted to enter or approach the premises because it is private property.

Must-Buy Pasalubong
  1. The Vigan Empanada is a crispy, savory treat that’s best served with suka. It’s usually stuffed with toge (mung bean sprouts), thinly sliced carrots, grated green papaya, a whole egg, and a generous amount of Vigan longganisa.
  2. The bagnet, which some regard to be the Ilocano counterpart of a crispy pata/lechon kawali/chicharon, is a sinful as well as delicious pasalubong that your meat-loving friends/family will undoubtedly love, especially with an ice cold beer.
  3. If you’re not sure what to get your coworkers, we recommend a bag of chichacorn! This pasalubong is not only delicious finger food to snack on during breaks, but it also comes in a variety of flavors: cheese, garlic, and sweet and spicy.
  4. If you enjoy breakfast, you’ll want to carry some Vigan Longganisa home with you. It pairs well with fried rice, a sunny side up egg, fresh tomatoes, and balsamic vinegar. What a delicious breakfast!
  5. If there’s one reason to bring home sukang Iloko, it’s because it goes well with the other delicious pasalubong you’ll be bringing home, such as empanadas, bagnets, and Vigan Longganisa.
  6. You’re probably in need of something sweet after all of your savory pasalubong. Then that’s perfect! The Royal Bibingka, which is distinguished by its tikoy-like texture, is rich and just sweet enough to offset the salty pasalubong.
